Laura has authored When Work is Hell - How to Cope with a Bully at Work. This new book explores why adults bully, how work environments either support or discourage bullying and mobbing and how you can better understand and differentiate a toxic work environment from the merely managerially incompetent. As most bosses aren't promoted based on their expertise maneuvering soft skills but usually because they have an idea of the hard skills involved; they though may have difficulty connecting to workers because they do lack those soft skills.
The book The Bully Pulpit - How to Cope with a Bully at Work looks at bullying behaviors; with an eye towards not only understanding behavior from an individual vantage point, but also the function it serves for the organization. Without a consideration of these, well-meaning suggestions that consist of only involving an individual in an answer, could escalate any bullying that may be occurring. This is the premise of "the Bully Pulpit" which offers a new way to understand bullying and explores the hierarchy that is necessary for a bully to survive.
